100 contributors, three generations, two cultures In 1858, the Anglo-Japanese Treaty of Amity and Commerce formally opened diplomatic relations between Britain and Japan. From 2008 to 2009, a wide range of events took place in both countries to celebrate the 150th anniversary of relations between these two island nations. See JapanUK150 for more details. East Meets East, a regional community heritage project set up by the charitable organsiation Interface Learning, explored 150 years of grassroots connections between the people of East Anglia and Japan. Over one hundred people, across three generations and two cultures, participated in the creation of East Meets East. Artists, academics, students, writers, Japanese residents, families of war veterans, and business people have each made their unique contribution to the project through research, oral history, art work and film projects. East Meets East presented both an historical record and contemporary update of connections between East Anglia and Japan, one that is full of vitality, friendship, and the future. The East Meets East community heritage project closed on November 1st, 2009. This website offers a range of exhibition photos and links to audio-visual material. Please browse the site until the end of 2010. |
